Ford Motor Company celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 1978, and to comemmorate the event Ford built a couple of special edition vehicles. Known as the Diamond Jubilee Edition, these special packages were available on the 1978 Ford Thunderbird and 1978 Continental Mark V [links open in new window]. Consisting of unique paint colors, interior trims, and special touches not available on any other model, the Diamond Jubilee Edition cars were rolling testaments to Ford's proud heritage. A new T-Roof Convertible open which featured removable tinted glass panels over the front seat area was introduced mid-year, and other new options for the year included a power antenna and a 40-Channel CB Radio system. The 1978 Ford Thunderbird would break its one year old, all time high sales record, claiming its place in history as the most popular Thunderbird ever. Ford built 352,751 Thunderbirds in 1978, including base, Town Landau, and Diamond Jubilee Edition models. This represented 3.94 percent of the industry total for the year. Quite an impressive achievement for a personal luxury car! |
